COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland Procurement Technical Assistance Center (MDPTAC) at the University of Maryland has received $66,000 from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to expand their outreach efforts in Maryland's HUBZones. HUBZone is a United States Small Business Administration (SBA) program for small companies that operate and employ people in historically underutilized business zones. The HUBZone program was created in response to the HUBZone Empowerment Act created by the US Congress in 1998.
The Procurement Technical Assistance Center is a program of the Maryland Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and was established to help businesses pursue and perform under contracts with the Department of Defense, other federal agencies, state and local governments and with government prime contractors. In the third quarter of FY2018, the Maryland PTAC assisted businesses in obtaining over $63 million in contract awards and provided training to more than 5,000 entrepreneurs and business owners in FY2017.
MDPTAC will collaborate with resource partners including Mariana Pardo, Director, SBA HUBZone Program, and Brian Darmody, Associate Vice President, UMD, to conduct a comprehensive, statewide training event for businesses and government agencies. The event will offer expertise in HUBZone education and opportunities for existing HUBZone businesses to network with prospects for contracting relationships. Prospective HUBZone businesses will receive extensive assistance with HUBZone applications.
"It is our mission to help position Maryland-based businesses to fully compete in the federal, state and local government procurement processes. This targeted approach with HUBZone companies will bring awareness to government procurement officials and prime contractor's regarding the availability of HUBZone firms to meet their goals. This initiative will help create job opportunities and strengthens our national economy, " said Denise Warner, Program Director, MDPTAC.
